There are a couple of Fabric and Lacebooks
which I created a few months back
which I would love to
share with you.
I know you may have seen some glimpses
of pages in previous posts but here is one
in more detail.
"Catching Innocence"
Most of the images I used as the central focus
are of some Daguerreotype cabinet cards
because I am so smitten with the
innocence of these beautiful
young girls and the
way they were presented for photographing.
I can only imagine how gorgeous their little
dresses were and the quality and
textures used for these.
I tried to use fabrics, laces, braids and buttons
which might reflect that quality!
It must have been quite an ordeal having your
photo taken back then when the perfect
pose had to be held !!!!!
No wonder this little girl would rather be
eating cake!!!!
I really wonder how often they got the chance
to dress up looking so elegantly!
I incorporated quite a lot of velvets and silks
into these pages to complement the
stunning images!
The back of the book here - most of the laces
used in this book were antique and vintage
which seem to complement
the smoothness and softness
of the velvets!
This particular book has been sold but I am happy
to say there could be more in the future!
Thank you so much for visiting
and I hope you are enjoying beautiful weather
wherever you are to take in some
of the beauty around us!
Welcome to all my new followers also!
Have a great week!

Hi Suzy
ReplyDeleteInspiring as always! The way you layer so many beautiful textures is just marvelous. I sat down to lunch today and said "I wonder what Suzy Q has been making lately..." And, these fabric journals are just so lovely to look at. Sometimes I just play your slideshow of photos because I'm so in awe of your creations. Thank you for sharing such beauty with us! Catherine
Suzy - it always amazes me how you are able to put all the laces/fabrics/trims/Daguerreotype images into such lovely books. You are such a fantastic artist. Loved reading this post.
ReplyDeleteSo now I'm going to give you a lit bit of trivia about how photographers were able to get people to stay still for those long exposures. Adults could hold still but children? Not so much. They were often drugged with laudanum so they would be mellow. Fact or fiction? Only the old photographers would know for sure. I learned this tidbit when I was taking a 19th Century Photo History course at university. It sounds plausible. Take a look at Daguerreotypes of infants. (1) the images are somewhat blurry; and (2) the eyes, if open, are possibly glazed over.
Also, one of the many uses of early photography when it was developed (pun intended) was to take photos of the deceased family members. It was cheaper than having paintings by artists of the time.
I know, more than you wanted to know. But I couldn't resist.
Hugs, Marrianna
Wow! What a truly amazing book you have created - your fabric and lace choices are the perfect complement to the stunning photographs. This book of yours is a true work of art Suzy!
ReplyDeleteI hope you are well and truly mended now, and enjoying being back in your studio, creating beautiful, happy things!
What a precious lace book with those darling images. Isn't lace just the loveliest stuff to paly with!!
ReplyDeleteGreat view of this project.

I love the stories you weave to go along with your creations. I wonder if people in those old pictures were actually expected not to smile or if it actually was as a result of being told to hold a position for a very long time. Maybe they were afraid of the flash? No matter - because the images are so perfect for your book!
ReplyDeleteHow gorgeous, Suzy! Your fabrics and laces compliment the photos so well. I adore the photo of the young girl sitting on the chair--her expression seems so wistful....
ReplyDeleteDear Suzy, what a fantastic and very wonderfully made book, love all the images of sweet girls and all the lovely fabrics, lace and other things you have used. Take care of your self, wish you a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeleteHugs Anni
Beautiful little girls. Makes you wonder what their lives were like when they grew up and then grew old. Your books are always inspiring.
ReplyDeleteYour books are so beautiful with their imagery, fabrics, laces and decorative additions. You create such heirloom pieces of work for anyone to treasure Suzy. Hope you are well.
ReplyDeleteOh! So beautiful! Page after page of exquisite bliss!
ReplyDeleteHow are you doing, my dear?
Summer is almost ended here, and the cooler weather is on its way. But, sometimes we will have a hot spell in October, so one never knows what the weather is going to be like here in central California.
Have a blessed weekend!
hugs,
Teresa

Hello sweet Suzi, this is just a short visit as I am still busy gardening, preventing my kid from skipping school and comforting my husband when he is tired from work...

Hi, Suzy!
ReplyDeleteGORGEOUS as always....so lovely, so detailed. I have a question for you! Do you have a tutorial on making these lace books are might you be able to direct me to one that you think is a good one? I am trying to figure out the connecting of the "pages", which are made from vintage placemats with beautiful embroidery on them. Trying to make it so that there is room for additional items after the book is completed, such as pieces of jewelry or cards or whatever! Does that make any sense? You will be so excited to see this!
hugs to y ou,
Betsy
I am late to your beautiful lace book post. Its beauty takes my breath away. I am happy that you are able to be creative once again. Your lace creations are stunning and magical. Creative Lace Bliss Dear...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great post about the fabric.
ReplyDeleteI started following you from the GYB hop... and love your books. I have just started making them, although not as "vintage" as yours. But I was wondering...do you have a tutorial or comments on how you "bound" the book pages?
